FAQs on Portable Toilet Rentals
How much does a porta potty rental cost?
- The average cost for a standard portable toilet is anywhere from $50 to $300.
- An ADA-compliant portable toilet can cost anywhere from $100 to $400.
Note: Rentals may come with additional fees, depending on local inventory and waste disposal regulations.
How do you determine the number of portable toilet rentals you require?
The general rule of thumb is to supply 1 toilet per 25 people — so if you have a construction crew of 100, you’d want to rent 4 porta potties.
Large events with hundreds or thousands of attendees obviously require more, but the same rule applies.

What are ADA/Handicap portable toilets?
These are wheelchair-accessible portable toilets that are ADA compliant for use at an event or on a jobsite. They are larger than standard porta potties to meet the standards outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
When renting a porta potty, what accessories should I consider ordering?
Portable toilets come with hand sanitizer dispensers, but many teams also choose to order complementary handwashing stations. OSHA requires handwashing stations on construction sites, but event managers and residential customers also like portable sinks because they provide a more sanitary experience.
How far in advance should I order a portable potty rental?
It’s best to reserve portable toilet rentals as soon as possible, especially during warmer months (busy season for construction projects) when availability can be limited.
At ASAP, we work with a vast network of haulers to ensure availability for our clients. Our streamlined logistics allow standard delivery within 24 to 48 hours, and we can accommodate last-minute, same-day deliveries available in many areas.
How often do portable toilets need to be emptied?
Portable toilets should be emptied and cleaned at least once a week; a good rule of thumb is to clean toilets once a week when you have <10 people using the unit, and twice per week when you have 20+ people using it.
However, you do not need to worry about porta potty maintenance. We’ll coordinate cleanings with haulers on your behalf and let you know when they are scheduled. Just make sure toilets are accessible and unlocked before haulers arrive so they can complete cleanings and replace toilet paper.
Where can you place a porta potty?
Choose a location that:
- Provides easy access to drop off, pick up, and service the portable toilets.
- Is centrally located and easily accessible (within a five-minute walk) to reduce frustration and save time for patrons.
- Fairly level and somewhere water does not gather when it rains (nobody wants to walk through a puddle to get to the bathroom).
Avoid:
- Water sources, such as rivers, lakes or ponds.
- Food service areas or areas where people might be eating.
- High traffic areas or places where people might gather, such as entrances or exits.
- Inclines.
For residential clients, porta potties can be placed indoors or in the garage. However, we recommend avoiding yard placement when possible — our delivery trucks need access for drop-off, sanitation services, and pickup, which can potentially damage lawns and sprinkler systems.
Our team is happy to suggest the perfect spot for your portable toilet when placing your rental.

What do I do if my porta potty falls over?
First, close the lid to ensure contents inside the porta potty don’t spill out. Next, assess any damage to the porta potty.
If it appears undamaged and structurally sound, you can tip it upright with assistance from someone else. If the porta potty seems damaged or unstable, please contact your ASAP advisor, and we’ll advise you on solutions.
Can I use a portable toilet in the freezing temperatures of winter?
Yes, but it must be properly winterized to ensure wastewater does not harden.
Our number one tip for keeping your porta potty from freezing is to have us deposit a chloride pellet mix into the toilet bowl with every service. The ASAP team will winterize your portable restroom rentals for a fee of $30 per unit.
What are OSHA’s rules & regulations for porta-potty usage?
OSHA requires job sites with 20 or fewer workers to have one (accessible, working) toilet. Teams of 20+ should have one toilet and one urinal per 40 workers, and teams of 200+ should have one toilet and one urinal per 50 workers.
Other requirements include:
- Portable toilets must be easily accessible from the work site — more specifically, they should be no more than a quarter mile or a five-minute walk away.
- Portable toilets should be lockable from the inside to ensure privacy.
- Crews with mixed-gender staff should provide separate bathroom facilities for each gender.
- You must provide at least one ADA-compliant portable restroom if you have disabled workers on site.
- Portable toilets must remain clean and sanitary and undergo regular cleanings.
- You must supply portable hand washing stations with toilets.
- If work extends beyond sunset, you must provide adequate lighting around facilities.

Do you need a license to rent a porta-potty?
In most cases, no. But our ASAP advisors can talk more about your use case and portable restroom rental options to ensure you adhere to all regulations and guidelines.
When will I be invoiced for renting a porta potty? Will there be any additional fees?
We ensure hassle-free invoicing by promptly sending invoices as soon as your rental period ends. (For recurring units, we generate invoices every 28 days.)
What is the difference between an event portable bathroom rental and a construction porta potty rental?
- Event portable toilets are designed for temporary events such as festivals and weddings, while construction portable toilets are intended for an extended period on construction sites.
- Event portable toilets are typically newer and may have features like sanitizer dispensers, ventilation, and a more aesthetically pleasing design. Construction porta potties are more basic in design and functionality.
- Construction portable toilets are typically more durable for extreme weather conditions.
